E9 Design celebrates bouclé designs Fontaine & Taiga

Australian furniture studio E9 Design has recently opened their doors in Sydney with a unique and admirable approach. The designer behind the brand, Steve Higgs’, overall vision was to create and manufacture high-end bespoke pieces for the commercial market. This initial premise led Steve to begin to breakdown the concept of the sofa, reconsidering its function and the possibilities of what it could become. The one-year long process resulted in the creation of the Ethos lounge. To showcase this innovative design, we collaborated with Steve on a recent photoshoot with Ethos which was upholstered in our bouclé design Fontaine, in three colourways.

During the design of Ethos, Steve made mention to three areas that informed the final outcome:

‘How it’s made, its function in the home, and indeed its role in modern life’.

The Ethos lounge provides incredible scope in all these areas. The back rest can be reconfigured with one long section for a sleek finish, or two for a more undulated look. The refined side table can also be added to the ends of sofa which act as an arm rest or small coffee table. The lounge itself can also be custom designed if a client has specific dimensions and requirements in a space. Steve recognises that fashion and trends play an important role in customers’ desires, so the upholstery covers can therefore be unzipped and changed with a new fabric. This allows for multiple benefits. Firstly, due to the quality of the lounge itself, its ability to be reconfigured, and the option of the upholstery to be easily changed, the lounge will last for a lifetime. This ingenuity not only supports the idea of ‘buy quality to buy once’, but also supports sustainability, and banishes throw away culture.

In an interview with Steve, he further elaborated that his aim was to ‘create a sofa that could be the foundation of a company – one that embraces significantly better solutions for our environment. To offer new levels of function, form, flexibility, and durability. Of course, it must be incredibly comfortable with superb finishes and details, however, our goals went well beyond that. We wanted to explore ways to bring people closer together and to positively affect the spaces they were in’.

Steve chose to select organic shapes and soft curves that encourage tactility, along with a human centric design approach. The furniture being adaptable and taking on various functions during its life in a home is an incredible notion.

‘We made a myriad of shapes and sizes to combine in ways that reflect people’s needs and personalities and are adaptable to any space or room size’.

The quality materials and considering all aspects of the design define Ethos. Steve additionally went beyond the external features, benefits, and aesthetics of the lounge to highlight the quality.

‘Underpinned by a steel frame and our ‘bounce’ steel sprung seat platform, it features luxury grade foams which have a life-time manufacturer’s warranty’.

Bouclé designs complement this lounge so beautifully that Steve has also chosen Casamance fabric Taiga as a core fabric in his removable covers range at E9 Studio. Taiga is not only a superior bouclé, but is available in a rich palette of classic and trend colours that are suitable for heavy commercial applications. A perfect choice to combat life’s daily challenges while creating tactile comfort and chic statement that celebrates a much admired mid-century look.
