Canvas is a boutique co-working space within the newly established Tribune Precinct in Hastings, New Zealand. Owner Alice Sip aimed to create a one-of-a-kind space that contrasts with the typical corporate office look, instead offering a modern workspace characterized by tranquillity and a relaxed ambiance.

Alice teamed up with interior designer Toni Gale of Tones & Co., who had previously designed the soft furnishings for the adjacent contemporary events space. An existing unpolished concrete wall set the tone for the palette, on which muted olive and moss greens and dark wooden furniture were layered.

"The goal for the co-working space was to create a sense of community while offering private or 'wall-facing' areas for those who prefer a bit more solitude," says Alice. To enhance Alice's design and furniture choices, Toni opted for Zepel’s signature Lux Velvet in a calming Moss shade.

“The space came with a raw concrete wall, from which Alice chose muted hues of olive and moss with dark wood – black for the tables and rich walnut for the kitchenette.”

"The large velvet curtains were selected to create a softer atmosphere in the conference room," says Toni. "Their substantial weight significantly improves acoustics, benefiting those using the space and providing privacy for meetings. These curtains not only enhance sound quality but also visually soften the entire room."

“Alice, who owns a furniture sourcing business, began by selecting the furniture she loved and then built the design around those pieces. It was crucial to her that the communal tables were more comfortable than typical office furniture. As a result, she chose solid wood dining tables in rich tones, which provide a warm, home-like atmosphere.”
