Situated in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, Wainuiomata is the latest retirement community developed by the Masonic Villages Trust. This project is designed to provide a welcoming environment where retirees can remain near their loved ones, promoting the formation of a close-knit community.

Central to the Village's design is the emphasis on community and local identity, especially evident in the Common Facilities building. Frances Fraser, Director of Honour Creative, aimed to enrich the light-filled space by integrating interior treatments that echo Wainuiomata's geographic features, history, and cultural essence.

Designing an interior that complements both the building’s architecture and the surrounding landscape, Frances stressed that every detail – including flooring, lighting, finishes, window treatments, furniture, and plants – needed to be modern, inviting, and mindful of the needs of ageing residents.

Extending the exterior design, Frances notes, “the colour scheme draws inspiration from the raw materials, hues, and sturdy forms of the nearby natural landscape.” Forest green tones feature in the joinery and wall colours, complemented by warm timber elements and stony textures on the servery benchtops and fireplace surrounds. Grooved wall panelling and intricately woven upholsteries add to the sophisticated yet rustic ambiance.

“Responding to the unique qualities of an environment and community creates a space that feels both special and utterly comfortable.”

The building features high-performance textiles that offer fire retardancy, washability, and durability to merge practicality with style. “We prefer to minimize the use of patterned fabrics, instead introducing variety through form and other design elements. This method enriches the material palette and imparts a sense of quality to the interior,” Frances explains.

The colours and textures of fabrics were carefully selected to upholster various furniture pieces, creating distinct yet cohesive zones within the open-plan, multi-use space. To achieve this, Frances emphasizes, “it is crucial to choose textiles that have the right colour, an appealing and suitable texture, and are fit for their intended purpose.”

“The Masonic Villages Trust has been a valued client for many years, committed to offering exceptional retirement and aged care. In all our collaborations with the Trust, we are afforded the creative freedom to address the needs of the community and the specific location. This approach allows us to design spaces that are uniquely tailored to their surroundings, making them feel both special and profoundly comfortable.”
