Curated by interior decorator Simone Haag, the Fables & Folklore exhibition at Craft celebrates our enduring fascination with storytelling and lore, delving into the narratives of objects and artworks and investigating why we remain captivated by them.

Fables & Folklore is the inaugural ‘Visionaries’ exhibition within Craft’s annual calendar. We spoke to Pip Stevenson, Commerce and Creative Manager of Craft, to learn more about the Gallery’s long-standing relationship and resulting collaboration with Simone.

Visionaries aims to present what’s next in Australian craft and design, in turn unearthing new artistic talent through the curatorial lens of leading Australian creatives. “Australia has such a vibrant creative community – from interior design and architecture to individual artists and makers – Visionaries is a great opportunity to remind people that Australian talent is worth investing in, and that the creative community needs that investment in order to thrive,” emphasises Pip.

“Simone has been visiting Craft as a source of unique, handmade objects and sculpture for her residential projects for a number of years,” says Pip. “As Craft presents works from over 100 Australian artists and makers at any given time, it has been a space that Simone has been able to bring her fantastic clients in for an intimate experience and select beautiful pieces for their home.”

"The recycled content of Naturama is very high and it retains a premium look and feeling, functioning exactly how you want it to. We couldn’t have asked for a better solution!"

“We have such a trusting relationship with Simone – an understanding of her practice as a residential curator and a deep respect for the way that she works seamlessly with artists and with her suppliers. We knew Simone would deliver something impactful, layered and visually stunning that would excite our audiences.”

Drapes in Naturama by Zepel FibreGuard create soft walls throughout the gallery, functioning as a canvas for works by 30 Australian artists and makers. “We were thrilled to see the Naturama textile come to life within Simone’s exhibition – it completely transformed the very open Craft gallery into a series of soft and dimly lit intimate spaces within which to explore and become quietly emersed in Simone’s vision.”

Composed of 55% recycled polyester and 45% organic cotton, Naturama is an eco-conscious textile that aligns with Craft’s future-focused sustainability platform, Conscious Craft. Designed to enable artists and makers to find solutions to sustainability issues in the production of art, craft, and design by demonstrating the transformation of by-products and waste materials.

“Zepel’s efforts as a sustainably led business are hugely admirable, and the use of Naturama in the design of this exhibition was a natural choice for Craft. Temporary installations like exhibitions can be hugely wasteful if not carefully considered, so it’s important to use materials which have been designed thoughtfully.”
