The Evolving Gatehouse

Stark Design features Christian Fischbacher furnishings in their award-winning interior.

Our client Stark Design has been awarded the winner of the Interior Design Scheme for the Asia Pacific category, in the 2020/2021 Annual International Design and Architecture awards for their design work on The Gatehouse.

This historic Federation home exemplifies a slow evolving approach to interior styling where decorative elements are layered intuitively over time with art, textiles, and luxury items. Stark Design collaborated with artisans and vintage dealers to source unique pieces from Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia. These carefully selected elements subtly add references to diverse aesthetics of historic cultures through texture, form and colour. The minimal white and grey palette of the walls, ceiling and floor create a sleek foundation for these pieces to be showcased.

The focus for this project was to create restful, serene spaces layered with pattern, texture, art, and artefacts that draw you to move through the home and explore. This is also reflected in the furnishings where fabrics were selected for the sculptural, abstract patterns and embroidered embellishments visible in the living area. The owners have respected the history of the building by retaining the metal ceilings and restoring iconic features, however, celebrate their love of eclecticism through the styling. A bold example of how the past, cultures and modernity can merge.

The Gatehouse is located in Mosman, Sydney.
